USPS Priority Mail Example (Ounces)
Option 7

Thanks to "Mimmy" for this shipping example from the forum.
The numbers (mailing cost) are set to the USPS Priority Mail rates as of July 1, 2001, and will have to be adjusted each time Priority Mail or Global Priority Mail rate fees increase.
In an answer to another post I took the time to tell what settings we have set up in our cart. If it will help some of you who want to ship Priority Mail and have orders calculated by weight, feel free to use these settings, they work for us!

You need to specify the weight of your items in your Buy Now code (units=) as ounces. So, weigh your items and specify units in ounces (i.e. 5 pounds would be units=80).

We use Priority Mail (with tracking, which adds 40 cents) and Global Priority Mail for international orders. Our goal is to provide good shipping rates and not get caught eating postage fees with larger orders, so a slight padding is built in to the units calculation (not much at all). Our cart shipping is set up as follows:

Flat Shipping (handling) fee of $.50 covers the Priority Mail tracking feature

Option 7: Calculated by weight or other value in bands
The principle is exactly the same as option 6 but is based on the sum of the values posted (with the units field)."
(DO NOT check the "Automatically set units to equal the price (shipping by value)" box)
Important: The Priority Mail FLAT RATE Cardboard Letter Envelope is set at the more expensive 2 pound rate, no matter how light the contents. To take advantage of the less expensive shipping for under 1-pound orders, we put our Fishcards and books into the Hard Letter Pack envelope, then put it INSIDE the Priority Mail Soft TYVEK Envelope, which can then go at the lesser 1-pound rate. Also, we have a statement saying that we reserve the right to adjust shipping charges as necessary for larger orders. Most of our orders go out for only $4 shipping, and we spend $3.90 to send it out, plus we get free use of the Priority Mail packaging and labels.

End of magnum opus! Hope it is of help to some of you... ---> Mimmy
